CSAT Questions and Solutions

11) Given below are some statements and some conclusions. Assuming the statements to be correct, identify the conclusions that definitely follow:

Statements: All white is grey; some white is black; No grey is red

Conclusions:

  1. Some black is grey
  2. No black is red
  3. Some white can be red

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

(a) I and II only

(b) I only

(c) III only

(d) I, II and III

Answer: (b)

Conclusion II clearly does not follow from the above figure. Since all white is grey and some white is black, any white that is black also has to be grey. Hence, there is definitely some black that is grey. Hence, conclusion I follows. Since all white is grey and no grey is red, the sets of white and red can never intersect. Hence, conclusion III does not follow. Hence, only conclusion I follows. Hence, option b.

12) There are 6 members A, B, C, D, E and F in a family who are spread across 3 generations. There are two couples in the family and no one from the third generation is married. E is the wife of C. F and B are a couple and the only people belonging to their generation. There are 4 male members in the family. Which of the following must be true?

(a) D is the grandson of A.

(b) A and E belong to the same generation.

(c) There is no female in the third generation.

(d) E is the father of F.

Answer: (c)

E is the wife of C, so E and C belong to the first generation or second generation. Moreover, since F and B belong to the same generation and are a couple, they must also belong to either 1st or 2nd generation. Since there are only two female members, they must be the part of 1st and 2nd generations only. Hence the third generation has no female members. Hence option (c) is the correct answer. A and E need not necessarily belong to the same generation. A and D may or may not belong to the same generation. So, D is the grandson of A, may or may not be possible. Similarly, relations between E and F can‟t be established.

13) Consider the following data about students of two different houses of a school:

What is the value of X in the above table?

(a) 5.55

(b) 5.85

(c) 6.20

(d) 5.17

Answer: (a)

Let the number of students in house A be a and number of student in house B be b.

Average weight = 61.5

(62a + 60b)/(a + b) = 61.5

or 62a + 60b = 61.5a + 61.5b

or 0.5a = 1.5b or a = 3b ..........(i)

Average height = X

(5.6a + 5.4b)/(a + b) = X

Putting value of a from (i), we get:

(5.6 × 3b + 5.4b)/(3b + b) = X

or (16.8b + 5.4b)/(3b + b) = X

or 22.2b/4b = X or X = 5.55 units

14) Payal walked 20 m towards the north. Then she turned right and walked 30 m. Then she turns right and walks 35 m. Then she turns left and walks 15 m. Finally she turns left and walks 15 m. In which direction and how many meters is she from the starting position?

Answer: (d)

15) Let a, b, c and d be natural numbers such that a - 1 = b + 2 = c – 3 = d + 4. Which one of the following is the largest number?

(a) a

(b) b

(c) c

(d) d

Answer: ( c )

To get the largest natural number, let us assume d = 0.

a - 1 = b + 2 = c – 3 = 4

⇒ a – 1 = 4 ⇒ a = 4 + 1 = 5

⇒ b + 2 = 4 ⇒ b = 4 – 2 = 2

⇒ c – 3 = 4 ⇒ c = 4 + 3 = 7

Hence, c is the largest number.
