Here is a list of rivers in the current affairs that you shouldn't miss in your prelims preparation.

Yankti Kuti River

  • The Yankti Kuti river in the eastern part of Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, has seen multiple glacial advances in the last few years.
  • This is because of climate variability and change in weather patterns.
  • The Kali river has two headwaters including Yankti Kuthi and Kalapani river flowing down from the Lipulekh Pass.
  • Himalayan passes of Mangsha Dhura and Limpiya Dhura are situated along the northern border of the Kuthi valley joining it with Tibet.

Zanskar River

  • Recently, the CHADAR trek expedition to Zanskar river, Ladakh was flagged off by the Chief of the Naval Staff.
  • Zanskar river is the left-bank tributary of the Indus river and flows entirely within Ladakh.
  • Iit drains both the Himalayas and the Zanskar Range and flows northeast to join the Indus River near Nimo.

Kadalundi River

  • Kadalundi river originates from the Western Ghats and has 2 tributaries Olipuzha and Veliyar. The Kadalundi River and the Chaliyar River merge with the Arabian Sea at Kadalundi.
  • There is significant shrinkage of  mudflats in Kadalundi due to extensive sand coverage.
  • The mudflats are a crucial source of habitat and prey for thousands of migrant birds.

Thamirabarani River

  • The Tamira Social Ecological Systems approach is being implemented in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu to restore the Thamirabarani River.
  • It is a perennial river originating from the Agastyarkoodam peak of Pothigai hills of the Western Ghats flowing through Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts into the Gulf of Mannar.
  • It was called the Tamraparni River in the pre-classical period and this name was adopted by the island of Sri Lanka.


Mahadayi River

  • A detailed project report for the Kalasa-Banduri water diversion project on the Mahadayi River was prepared.
  • The river originates in the Western Ghats from the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka’s Belagavi district.
  • It is a rain-fed river also called Mandovi in Goa, with Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary located on the Chorao island.
  • Major tributaries include Surla Nala, Haltar Nala, Kalasa Nala, Banduri Nala, Pansheer Nala etc.

Vaigai River

  • Recently, an international, high-speed passenger ferry service was inaugurated to connect Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu with Kankesanthurai near Jaffna in Sri Lanka.
  • The service is operated by the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board and Shipping Corporation of India.
  • It will go along the Palk Strait via the Vaigai river.
  • The river originates from the Varusanadu Hills of the Western Ghats and is a major river in the city of Madurai.
  • The river finds a mention in Sangam literature.

Vaitarna River

  • The river was in news because a fisherman from Maharashtra’s Palghar district was attacked by a bull shark in it.
  • The river originates from the Sahyadri hill range in the Nasik district of Maharashtra and drains into the Arabian Sea.
  • It supplies drinking water to Mumbai and is the largest river in the Northern Konkan region.
  • Bull sharks are euryhaline (thrive in both salt and freshwater) and are found in warm, shallow waters along coasts and in rivers. 

Brahmani River

  • The Odisha government is working on rejuvenating the Brahmani river delta which is a major inter-state east-flowing river.
  • It is formed by the confluence of the Sankh and South Koel rivers near Rourkela.
  • It cuts across the Eastern Ghats forming a minor gorge at Rengali in Odisha.
  • The river flows through the states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Orissa.
